Jesus Came to Set Us Free

It’s been a time of God-incedences. The power of the Holy Spirit that lives within me makes it much too difficult to see these things as mere co-incidences.

These words of Jesus were my focus during a Bible study lesson several days ago:

“The Spirit of The Lord is on Me, because He has anointed Me to preach good news to the poor, He has sent Me to proclaim  freedom to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” Luke 4:18-19

At the same time I learned the husband of a long time friend is in prison. Both of them are believers. This was such hard and shocking news. Later that week this friend would host a birthday party for a mutual friend. I would be in attendance.

Just the day before, I chose to advocate for a young girl from El Salvador, in need of a sponsor. Julissa’s bio includes this information: “Her father is in prison.” I’m so thankful that she attends an amazing Compassion Project in El Salvador: Casa de Pan at Eternal Rock of Ages Church. We met Pastor Carlos, his wife Candy and the Compassion staff there during our trip. There is no doubt in my mind they will love her, pray with her and her family, and share Jesus with them in beautiful ways.

During the party my friend asked about my El Salvador trip. As I told of our amazing times there and the beautiful people we met, she shared she has wanted to sponsor a child for quite a long time. She loves to travel, and thought Central America would be a great place to visit a child one day. She also knew she would like the child to be a girl. How could I not share about Julissa. As I did, I made the simple comment that she may already feel a connection. To make that connection even stronger, both my friend and Julissa are an only child.  She took time to pray about it and share with her husband. On Thanksgiving Day I received the message that they would be Julissa’s sponsor. What a way to praise and honor God even in the midst of their own difficulties.

As we begin our seasonal celebrations and our hearts are turned to the gift of God’s One and Only Son remember that He came as a precious little child to set the captives free. His grace is sufficient for these children and their families. His grace is sufficient for my friend and her family. Most of all His grace is sufficient to release us from our own chains, too.

That’s the way it is with the Father’s Love for us. Will you love on a sweet child today to provide the support she needs to grow and thrive, attend school, and most of all learn just how very much God loves her. We heard it over and over again in El Salvador. Your sponsorship dollars and your letters do make a tremendous difference. Click here to sponsor other waiting children.

12-3-2015 — A little added note here. My friend’s husband had a parole hearing this morning. The family has seen God do a work in his life, and they are excited he will be home for Christmas. Please keep them in your prayers.
